The Name
“Unspoken” tackles the issue of fast fashion and body positivity in the fashion industry. I knew that I could communicate a message through patterns, and I wanted to ensure the fabric was ethically sourced. I used the ASL alphabet (American Sign Language) layered on natural floral patterns to communicate the idea of inner thoughts. I think of sign language as a silent communicator.
The Message
How do I look? How do you feel when you put a garment on? Every garment has the power to give or take away confidence from the wearer. I wanted to create a collection inspired by the beauty of nature, and reflect it onto the wearer to bring them self-peace and self-love. Each piece of the collection aims to bring beauty and love to the wearer.
The Zippers
Where are the zippers? - there arn’t any!
This collection is 100% biodegradable made completely of bio-materials, meaning: no plastics, no zippers and no waste. Not only are the custom fabrics printed on organic cotton, but the designs use alternative and innovative closures to ensure that there is minimal waste.
The Fabrics
I first started designing my own material when I learnt and realised that sustainability in fashion comes from all aspects of the design, which includes the fabrics and materials used to make each garment. I designed my own floral patterns, and used a company to help me print my patterns using eco-friendly dyes onto organic cotton, which is a biodegradable material.
The Collection
In Summer 2020, the 6 piece collection was sewn and made at my home studio. Because of the Global Covid-19 Pandemic, the official look book photos were taken and released in the Summer of 2021. The collection was set in nature, covered by leaves and surrounded by grass, highlighting the floral prints of each garment.
